Thanks again for doing such a great job of flying the collars. The collar that was up in Oregon was quite a challenge as road conditions worsened as I moved further north and west. After a 13 mile quad ride I got within a mile of the collar and went downhill to retrieve it. We sure are good at getting good locations from the plane as the collars were only 200 feet, 218 feet, 320 feet and 380 feet from our waypoints. Easy to get a signal and locate the collar when you get that precise. It was amazing though to see that it is very possible to not be able to pick up a signal even when you are less than a ½ mile from the collar – due to depressions in the ground and or small hills between you and the collar. Anyway, thanks a million and once again great job!!!  ''

“John Romero and I were headed into the Wyoming Mountain Range to find elk. Our study involved two large, free-range, collared elk herds. The collars log GPS points every four hours, and for eight hours every other Tuesday, they emit a signal which enables us to download all the points remotely. Time was definitely of the essence, and Owyhee Air delivered.”

“Mr. Romero, a master in aerial telemetry, found our elk in no time. John Romero over-shadowed any other aerial telemetry survey I have ever been on. His attitude, professionalism, and knowledge of telemetry physics, is head and shoulders above the competition. We found all of the elk we needed, plus some we have never found before. Every single GPS point was downloaded and we were able to gather herd size counts over and above just downloading. Indeed, our flight path was even mapped, all before lunch. My only complaint was that I wanted to stay up in the air longer. It was a great experience and I look forward to working with Owyhee Air again.”

One of the greatest assets Owyhee Air offers is its ability to conduct telemetry surveys without the biologist having to be present.  I, like most biologists, would like to participate in every survey.  However, with increasing workloads this is not always possible.   For years I put off needed sage grouse collaring projects because I knew I would not have the time to do the follow-up work justice.  John Romero, however, lets me know when he is flying and I have the option to fly.  If I’m tied up with other projects, John conducts the survey on his own. I have found John’s solo work to be extremely reliable and accurate.  In addition the data has been provided to me in a timely manner and in a usable format.  I will continue to put radio collars on wildlife knowing that I will receive reliable follow-up from Owyhee Air.
